Hey guys! Today I’m sharing with you my simple summer skincare routine. It isn’t too far off from other seasons, but the hot summer weather definitely changes my skin a bit. For the most part, my skin during the Winter months is drier than any other season. As the weather heats up after Spring, my skin becomes oily but yet still dry. I think this is called combination skin? Overall the products I choose are clean and allergen friendly. If you haven’t already, check out my post on Clean Beauty Products where I share my the 5 shops that I have used and love.

It’s so important to figure out your own skin type. Especially as the seasons change so that you know you’re taking proper care of it. Smooth, healthy skin to let my summer glow really pop is what I’m after. Just as an example, my skin in the winter months is much drier so I use a heavier moisturizer a few times a week. In the summer though, I use a lighter moisturizer.
When I’m approaching a new season I’m always eager to try new products. And you can find good reviews online but I’ve found that this doesn’t really make sense or help me at all. My skin is completely different than another person’s skin. And I wouldn’t know much about theirs from a review.
If a product has positive reviews, then maybe try it out so long as the ingredients and whathaveyou are good for you. The last thing you’d want to do is try something new based on so many good reviews, and have it mess all your shit up.
Even better, I typically treat myself to a facial at my favorite spot at the beginning of each season. I love the pampering, and I think it sets my skincare at a solid baseline for me to maintain for the next few months. They then recommend products to me based on what they know and can see in my skin.
I think this is the best way because it’s completely tailored. But! sometimes facials are a luxury and I get that not everyone can/wants to do this 4 times a year. But I love it, so why not.
I don’t wear much (if any) makeup, mostly just for special occasions. But when I do, I like to first give my face a good wipedown with micellar water. Then I use a pre-cleanse like this one that I’ve been using for well over a decade. It loosens up sebum (oil), removes lingering makeup, and preps the skin for a deeper cleanse.
It doesn’t dry my skin out and it’s super gentle so I’m not left with any irritation. Also! There’s a little hint of lavender in it which I looooove. When I’m not wearing makeup, which is like 99.9% of the time, then I usually skip the micellar water step and just use the pre-cleanse to prep my skin for a good cleanse.
As far as post-workout prep goes, I usually wipe my face with these micellar water wipies by Simple, immediately after leaving the gym. Then once I get home to shower I do all the rest. I’m not big into showering at the gym unless I’m in a hurry to get somewhere afterward. When I do shower there though, I scale down my routine quite a bit. It’s usually the wipes, cleanser, and moisturizer.
After a good prep, I’ll either use my trusty CeraVe cleanser which I’ve been using since middle school over 10 years ago. I switch off between that and this Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser which is extremely gentle on my sensitive skin. This one is fairly new for me since last summer.
Before that, I was switching off between the CeraVe cleanser and Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel (which I also swear by). I wanted to try something new but tbh I’ve never been disappointed with a single product from Dermalogica. I love them and will forever swear by them.
While I don’t exfoliate every single day, I will use the Dermalogica (of course) Daily Microfoliant every other day in the summer. This is different from the winter where I use it 1-2x per week. I usually use a more course facial scrub in the winter. So every other day I use the microfoliant, and then 1-2x per week I use their Gentle Cream Exfoliant.
Whenever I use the microfoliant I massage it in for at least 30 seconds, and then I let it sit on my face for an additional 30 seconds. I don’t really know if that does anything? Call me out here, but to me, it seems like it lets things sink in a bit before rinsing.
I never used to use a toner. But then I tried one and fell in love with the refreshing mist after a good cleanse. I wondered why I hadn’t been using one all along! There are so many that I’ve tried and loved but recently I’ve been using the Rose Hibiscus Face Mist by Herbivore (mentioned in this post). It’s moisturizing, supports cellular turnover, and has witch hazel so it helps with inflammation and puffiness. It’s amazing, highly recommend.
I’ve noticed that I really only need a toner in the summer. In the winter, my skin in fine. Maybe since it’s not as oily in the winter as it is in the summer. But I notice during the summer when I don’t use a toner, I’m definitely more oily throughout the day or the following day.
Like toners, I never used to use serums. I always thought they were for older people with aging skin? When I mentioned that to my esthetician when I was getting a facial last year, she totally called bs on my assumption. She used Eminence on me and I fell in love. She sent me home with a sample of their Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum and I’ve been hooked ever since. I use this one in the mornings and will definitely keep it up as a part of my simple summer skincare routine.
For evening serums, I haven’t hopped on this train yet. I’m going from using no serums to using one now, so I’m sure I’ll start incorporating one soon for the evening part of my routine. I’ve heard really good things about Naturopathica and their night serum, so I might give that one a try this summer and see how it works out for me.
I aaaaalways use the CeraVe PM moisturizer at night. I’ve been using this since middle school and it has never let me down. In the mornings or after working out I use this Quenching Essence by Murad and I’m in love with how lightweight it is. I’m able to follow up with a moisturizer with SPF like this one, also by Murad.
While I haven’t hopped on the oil train yet. I’ve heard amazing things about using facial oils, especially at nighttime. My esthetician is constantly telling me how my skin would likely appreciate getting an oil applied at night. They’re supposed to help for enlarged pores (got em), sealing in moisture (news to me), and helping to repair the skin’s natural barrier for protection (makes sense). I’ve heard really good things about this one from Elemis so I may be adding this to my regimen this summer.
For sunscreen, I always use one in the morning. I’m really bad about using sunscreen throughout the year but definitely, in the summer I make sure I either apply sunscreen or I use a moisturizer that has SPF. Then when I’m out and about in the sunshine, I will take my Supergoop Unseen with me to apply to my face throughout the day.
There you have it! 6 simple steps! And really, this whole thing start to finish only ever takes me about 5 minutes. I like to let some of the products sit on my face for at least 30-45 seconds before rinsing (cleanser and exfoliant). But this is just 5 minutes of my day that I really enjoy. It’s a bit of self-care for myself and I always feel good after a little TLC.
Of course, I also do some face masks sprinkled in throughout the week, but it’s not a part of my daily routine. Unless it’s a Sunday because I always do a face mask on Sundays without a doubt.
Do you guys have a go-to routine for the summer months that you love? I’d love to hear about them! I’m also always game for trying new products so definitely gimme your skincare secrets :).
